Common Myths Regarding Orthodontic Treatment

Young girl with bracesOrthodontic treatment is more common than ever, mostly because of the wide array of orthodontic hardware available these days. However, even with a growth in popularity, there are still a few misconceptions and myths that abound regarding orthodontic treatment.

Here at Firestone Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we believe in patient education. We want to make sure our patients and their parents are well-educated and able to make informed decisions about their orthodontic health.

Orthodontic Myths

Below are a few misconceptions regarding braces and other forms of orthodontics:

  • Orthodontists are the same as regular dentists – While family dentists treat traditional dental problems such as gum disease, dental cavities, and tooth decay, an orthodontist specializes in the misalignment of the teeth. Orthodontists are much better qualified to care for these misalignment issues.
  • Orthodontic treatment takes a very long time – While there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all treatment plan, we can tell you that orthodontic treatment usually only lasts around 2 years. Your specific time may vary depending on the severity of your condition and the type of orthodontic treatment you’re undergoing, but a few years is a small investment to make for a beautiful smile that can last a lifetime.
  • Orthodontic treatment is only for teens – While the majority of orthodontic patients are teens, there has also been an increase in adult orthodontic patients in recent years. Tooth alignment can happen at any age, however, adults can feel much more comfortable wearing recent types of braces, as they are more subtle and inconspicuous than ever.
