Consequences of Choosing Not to Floss

Child flossingFlossing may not be high on your list of fun things to do, but it is absolutely necessary to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Flossing each day will remove food debris, plaque, and bacteria from in between the teeth. Your toothbrush is unable to reach these areas, making them vulnerable to decay and dental cavities without the help of floss.

Consequences of Skipping the Floss

Below are just a few of the harmful things that can happen if you choose not to floss:

  • Tartar buildup – Tartar is what occurs when plaque is allowed to harden and solidify. While plaque can be removed from the teeth by practicing good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing daily), tartar can only be removed by professionals. The process of removing tartar can be quite uncomfortable.
  • Dental cavities – If plaque and bacteria are allowed to build up between the teeth, dental cavities may form. Cavities can be treated with dental fillings, but it’s an uncomfortable and costly procedure.
  • Gum disease – Flossing is the best way to keep your gum tissue healthy. If the gums are exposed to plaque and bacteria for too long, they can become infected, causing gum disease and periodontitis. If gum disease is left untreated, it can even cause tooth loss.
  • Bad breath – Food debris and bacteria stuck between the teeth will not have a pleasant odor. This will lead to chronic bad breath, which can cause embarrassment.
