Interdental Brushes

Interdental brush used on woman's teethInterdental brushes are the secret weapon against gum disease and gingivitis. Interdental brushes can help to fight and prevent gum problems by scrubbing the gum tissue between the teeth, removing any plaque and food debris that may have become lodged there.

When plaque is allowed to build up on the teeth, it irritates the gum tissue. When this happens, the gums will become red, swollen, and inflamed. If you have a history of gingivitis or other gum health issues, it’s a good idea to include interdental brushing in your everyday dental hygiene routine.

Interdental Brush

An interdental brush has a handle quite similar to that of a toothbrush. On the other end is a small, narrow, bristled head meant to clean between the teeth. Interdental brushes can be found in the oral healthcare section of any drugstore and come in different sizes to fit the size of the gaps in your teeth. Most people will need one brush for the molars and a different sized brush for the front teeth.

When you first start using your interdental brush, it’s common for the gum tissue to bleed or become tender as it toughens up. Continue using the brush; the bleeding and tenderness will decrease as the gums become healthier.

If your child has a history of gum problems or if you have questions about interdental brushing, please contact Firestone Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. Our children’s dental office is located here in Firestone, Colorado.
