Signs that Your Child has a Healthy Mouth and Teeth

Child in dental chairWhile it is important to know the signs of trouble in your child’s mouth and teeth, it can be just as important to know what signs point to strong, healthy teeth. This allows you to know that your child is keeping up with his or her oral health and gives you a baseline so you can recognize the signs of trouble more easily.

Signs of a Healthy Mouth

Below are a few of the signs that your child’s oral tissues and teeth are healthy:

  • Healthy gum tissue – Health gum tissue is pink, firm, and should sit flush with your child’s teeth. The best way to keep your child’s gum tissue healthy is to make sure he or she is brushing gums as well as teeth and flossing every day.
  • Pleasant or neutral breath – A healthy mouth will emit neutral or pleasant smelling breath. The more bacteria and plaque that accumulates in the mouth, the more odor they will begin to give off. This will eventually cause chronic bad breath issues, which can be a sign of dental disease.
  • Strong teeth – Lastly, some time during each of your child’s checkups will be devoted to checking the strength of his or her teeth and any restorations in the mouth. This includes dental fillings or crowns. The best way to keep teeth and restorations healthy is by brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and bringing your child to visit our office every six months for an exam.
