What Parents Should Know About Soft Teeth

Two Kids at dinner tableIn our office, we hear many parents talking about the possibility of their children having soft teeth, especially if they believe other members of the family have soft teeth. But is there really a condition that can make your children more vulnerable to dental cavities and tooth decay? There is, but chances are good that you and your kids don’t have it.

What You Should Know About Soft Teeth

There is a condition that can cause the tooth enamel to be thin and vulnerable to dental cavities and tooth decay. This condition is known as amelogenesis imperfecta. People suffering from this condition will have tooth enamel that appears brown, uneven, and pitted. This is not a very common condition.

Most people (including kids) who suffer from frequent dental problems actually have totally normal teeth. The problem lies not in the condition of the tooth enamel, but with improper at-home oral hygiene. This means that your child’s tooth enamel is strong and developed, and that these dental problems are completely avoidable.

The best way to avoid tooth decay and dental cavities in childhood is to teach your children about good oral hygiene habits. Make sure your kids are brushing their teeth at least twice a day, flossing every day, and visiting our office every six months for a dental cleaning and a checkup. It’s also important to teach your children not to share eating utensils, toothbrushes, or pacifiers.

To schedule your child’s regular dental checkup, please don’t hesitate to contact Firestone Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics today. Our office is located here in Firestone, Colorado.
