Make Dental Visits a Back-to-School Tradition

School is just around the corner! Here at Firestone Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we suggest that, along with an annual physical, and going to the store for new clothes and backpacks, you should also add a visit to the dentist to your back-to-school to-do list. It’s recommended that children see their dentists for a check-up at least twice a year and fall is a great time to do it! Most kids have spent their summers indulging in treats like ice cream, soda and cotton candy, so bring them in to get those chompers cleaned!

Dental visits are important because potential oral health problems, such as tooth decay or gum disease can be detected and treated. Preventative measures can also be taken during check-ups, including teeth cleaning, fluoride treatment, dental sealants, and instruction on good dental hygiene habits. Making sure your children get a clean bill of oral health before the school year will allow them to return to class sporting not only new clothes, but a happy and healthy smile. In addition, untreated dental problems can be painful and embarrassing, and can actually hurt your child’s educational and social development.

In the end, good oral health for children starts at home with proper diet and dental hygiene. The daily practice of brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once a day is still the best foundation for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Very young children (ages one to five) are particularly prone to tooth decay and as a parent, you should supervise (or actually brush for them) to make sure they do a good job. A diet light on sugary snacks and drinks and rich in fruits and vegetables goes a long way toward maintaining good oral and overall health.

To schedule your children’s’ back-to-school dental checkups, make an appointment with our skilled dentists here at Firestone Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in Firestone, Colorado.
