Things Your Tongue Can Reveal About Your Overall Health

There are a number of health conditions that can manifest on your tongue. This means it’s important that you check your tongue in the mirror regularly to check for signs of a problem. We also suggest contacting our office if your child is experiencing any unexplained tongue pain.

Tongue Problems & What They Can Mean

Below are a few common tongue issues and what they might mean for your child’s overall health:

  • Strawberry red tongue – If your child’s tongue appears glossy and bright red, it might be a sign that he or she lacks vitamin B12 or iron. Vegetarians are especially prone to vitamin B12 deficiencies. If your child’s tongue appears red and smooth, you should ask his or her pediatrician about taking vitamin supplements.
  • Cottage cheese texture – If the tongue is coated in a white, lumpy substance, your child may be suffering from an oral yeast infection called thrush. Thrush is common in small children, those with autoimmune disorders and diabetes, chemotherapy patients, and the elderly. If your child has thrush, he or she needs to visit the pediatrician!
  • Black or brown fuzz – The appearance of what looks like black or brown hair or fuzz on the tongue might be an indicator that you need to pay more attention to your child’s oral hygiene. Teaching your kids to brush their tongues may be all that needs to be done!

If you’re concerned about your child’s tongue health, or if he or she is exhibiting the above symptoms, please call Firestone Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. Please contact our Frederick dentist today!
