Many expecting mothers don’t realize how much oral health can impact their pregnancy and overall well-being. From hormonal changes to increased risks of gum disease, taking care of your teeth during pregnancy is essential for both you and your baby.
During pregnancy, hormonal shifts can make your gums more sensitive and prone to inflammation. This can lead to pregnancy gingivitis, which causes red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If left untreated, it can progress to more serious gum disease, which has been linked to preterm birth and low birth weight.
Additionally, morning sickness exposes teeth to stomach acid, which can erode enamel and increase the risk of cavities. Cravings for sugary snacks can also contribute to tooth decay. That’s why maintaining good oral hygiene is more important than ever.
Taking care of your teeth and gums while pregnant doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s what you should do:
Brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, and floss once daily to remove plaque and food particles stuck between your teeth.
Don’t brush immediately after vomiting, as stomach acid softens enamel. Instead, rinse with water or a fluoride mouthwash first.
If cravings hit, opt for calcium-rich foods like cheese and yogurt to support strong teeth and bones for you and your baby.
Staying hydrated helps reduce dry mouth and wash away food particles.
Regular dental checkups are not only safe but essential during pregnancy and help prevent potential issues. Be sure to inform your dentist that you’re expecting so they can adjust treatments if necessary.
Routine cleanings and checkups are completely safe. If dental work is needed, the second trimester is the best time for treatment. X-rays should be avoided unless absolutely necessary, but if required, modern digital X-rays minimize exposure and are generally safe with proper shielding.
