What to Look for in a Toothpaste

Tube of toothpaste

When looking for toothpaste, taste is not the most important thing to take into consideration. Toothpaste is not created equal. Some are better than others when it comes to quality and value. In comparison, some toothpaste is specially designed to address specific symptoms in the mouth.

Getting toothpaste with the right ingredients can improve your dental health and leave your teeth feeling clean and fresh. Here are a few things you should look for when buying your next toothpaste.

  • Fluoride: Fluoride is the most effective ingredient when it comes to fighting cavities. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste can remove any plaque and tartar from your teeth and protect them from decay. While most toothpaste contains fluoride, it is still important to look for it in the ingredients to be sure.

  • Avoid Sweeteners: Some kinds of toothpaste use added sweeteners to improve the taste of the toothpaste. This is a huge mistake since added sugar is one of the most harmful things for teeth. Always look at the ingredients and avoid toothpaste that relies on sugar for flavor.

  • American Dental Association Seal of Approval: Only toothpaste that is proven to be effective is allowed to use an ADA seal. When you choose an ADA-approved toothpaste, you can be sure that it has lived up to rigorous standards. However, it is important to know that the ADA seal is entirely voluntary. You may find some natural brands that are great but haven’t requested an ADA approval. In this case, you may have to rely on the ingredients to determine whether it is good for you or not.

It is important to start learning about dental health early on. If you’re looking for a children’s dentist in or around the Fort Lupton, Frederick, or Dacono areas, visit Firestone Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. You can get great pediatric dental care here and encourage your kids to become more responsible with their oral hygiene.
