Is it Bad That My Kids Share Their Toothbrush?

A+ A- A Main Content Toothbrushes

Sharing a toothbrush among your kids can raise various health concerns, so children’s dentists generally do not recommend it. While seen as a small or harmless shortcut to maintaining oral hygiene, this habit can actually pose significant risks.

The Why?

Human saliva contains substances like enzymes and antibodies that protect the body from many infections. However, because diseased saliva is full of dangerous bacteria and viruses, it can spread other infections.

It has been proven in recent years that viruses, such as the coronavirus, can transfer by saliva from one person to another. The following is a list of diseases that can be transmitted through contaminated saliva:

  • Viruses, like the avian flu virus, Epstein-Barr virus, herpes virus, rhinovirus, and flu, which cause colds, as well as infections like cytomegalovirus and hepatitis C and B.
  • Streptococcus bacteria are the source of bacterial infections that can cause serious diseases like MRSA and dental cavities.

Oral Health Complications

Children often experience minor gum bleeding while brushing due to sensitive gums or developing dental structures. Sharing a toothbrush can transfer bloodborne pathogens between siblings, increasing the risk of infections. Moreover, periodontal (gum) diseases can also be transmitted through shared toothbrushes, leading to potential long-term dental health issues.

Weakened Immune Systems

Young children typically have developing immune systems which are not as strong as those of adults. Sharing a toothbrush can expose them to a higher bacterial load than they would typically encounter, which can overwhelm their immune defenses and result in illnesses more frequently.

If your kids are already in the habit of sharing a toothbrush, it’s important to address this promptly. Clearly communicate the health risks associated with sharing a toothbrush. Provide each child with a new, distinct toothbrush. Praise and reward your children for using their own toothbrushes.
