Is Fluoride Safe for Kids?

A young girl brushing her teeth

Have you ever thought about if fluoride is dangerous for your kid? It’s a question on everyone’s mind, and for good reason.

Fluoride strengthens your child’s teeth. It also prevents dental decay. It is present in:

  • Mouthwash
  • Fluoride varnish
  • Drinking water
  • Toothpaste
  • Mouth rinse

It not only strengthens the enamel but makes teeth more resistant to acid attacks.

Acid attacks are usually a result of:

  • Plaque
  • Bacteria
  • Sugar
  • Leftover food particles after a meal

The main concern is the amount of fluoride kids are exposed to. According to the ADA and children’s dentists, oral hygiene guidelines ensure kids get the right amount without going overboard.

So, how much is enough?

There’s no set limit. However, it’s better to talk to a dentist before deciding. In the meantime, we advise cleaning your kid’s teeth with water. Here’s what dental pediatrics say:

“For kids, the toothpaste amount should be pea-sized.”

This applies to kids above two and below six.

How Much is Too Much?

One word: Moderation.

That’s all it takes!

Did you know that some communities have fluoridated water? If you reside in one, your kid is getting plenty of fluoride. Look to your local water supplier for answers.

My Child Swallowed Toothpaste. What Should I Do?

Don’t panic!

If your kid swallows a small amount, they won’t be in any danger. However, make an effort to reduce these occurrences. Show your child the right brushing technique. See your dentist for an emergency examination.

Do I Need to Purchase Fluoride-Free Toothpaste?

Indeed, that is a choice. In case you were wondering, you won’t jeopardize the oral health of your child.

Guidelines for dentistry for children state that it might not provide the same level of cavity protection as fluoride toothpaste.

In conclusion, children can safely be exposed to fluoride. However, use it in small amounts. Stand by your kid’s side while they are brushing. Don’t forget to schedule routine dental appointments.
