Facts About Baby Teeth that Every Parent Should Know

Young baby smilingBaby teeth are a very important part of helping your child achieve and maintain beautiful and healthy smiles that will grow with them into adulthood. You can help your children keep their teeth strong and healthy throughout childhood, but first, there are a few things you should know about baby teeth.

Facts About Baby Teeth

Below are a few facts about baby teeth that can help you keep your child’s teeth strong and healthy:

  • Baby teeth enamel is tough but vulnerable – Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your child’s body but is constantly attacked by bacteria, sugar, and acids in food. Make sure your child’s tooth enamel is kept strong by reminding them to drink water and limit sugary and acidic food. Your child should also be brushing and flossing daily.
  • Baby teeth can be lost too early – Tooth loss typically starts around the age of six and ends by the age of twelve. A year or two of variation is common, but if teeth are lost too early, please schedule an appointment here at Firestone Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics to make sure it won’t be a problem.
  • Baby teeth create the base for a healthy bite pattern – Baby teeth are an important part of developing a straight and healthy adult bite pattern. If baby teeth are neglected or lost too soon, the other teeth can crowd them, leading to a crooked smile.
  • Baby teeth need proper nutrition to stay healthy – Lastly, a healthy diet is important to maintaining a healthy smile. Make sure your child is eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, fiber, and dairy products. These are all foods that can help strengthen the teeth and enamel.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you should bring your child in for his or her first dental appointment by the emergence of the first tooth or by the age of one. This helps your child become comfortable in a dental office at an early age.

To make an appointment for your children to receive a dental cleaning and a checkup, please don’t hesitate to contact Firestone Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. Our child’s dental office is located here in Firestone, Colorado.
